As the prince was on the verge of becoming a Buddha, auspicious light surged upward, reaching the palace of Māra, the demon of death and desire. Māra, seeking to obstruct the prince’s attainment of Buddhahood, commanded three demonesses to go and seduce him. The three demonesses were named Tṛṣṇā (Thirst/Desire), Rati (Pleasure), and Rāga (Passion). They approached the prince, diligently flattering him with charming smiles and seductive gestures. However, the prince remained deeply serene and undisturbed, seeing them as if they were lotus flowers emerging unstained from the mud. Unwilling to give up, the three demonesses exerted all their enchanting wiles and seductive allure. The prince admonished them, saying, “Though your forms are beautiful, your hearts are not upright. You are like exquisite crystal vessels filled with filth. Do you not feel ashamed to come here and deceive people?” He then used his spiritual power to reveal their true forms to them. The demonesses saw themselves as skeletons with bones joined by tendons, covered in pus and mucus, their appearance vile and repulsive. Upon seeing this, they were filled with shame and remorse, and they fled, prostrating themselves as they departed.
