Amitābha, also known as Amida or Amitāyus, is a celestial Buddha in Mahayana Buddhism. Amitābha is particularly important in the Pure Land sects of Buddhism, which emphasize devotion to Amitābha as a means to attain rebirth in the Pure Land, a paradise free from suffering where enlightenment is easily achievable.

Amitābha is described as a Buddha of infinite light and life, and his name means “Infinite Light” (Amitābha) or “Infinite Life” (Amitāyus). According to the larger Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra and the smaller Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra, Amitābha made a series of vows, the most important of which is the 18th vow, promising that anyone who calls upon his name with sincere faith will be reborn in his Pure Land, known as Sukhāvatī.

In iconography, Amitābha is often depicted sitting in meditation or standing with his hands in a gesture of welcome, symbolizing his readiness to receive devotees into the Pure Land. He is usually shown with a serene and compassionate expression, reflecting his role as a savior and guide.
